Hatha Yoga Classes – A Yogic Revival
Part 1
In 1888 a legend was born. If you enjoy hatha yoga classes (almost all yoga classes are a variation on hatha yoga) and haven’t heard of Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya then you should read on. Krishnamacharya is widely known as the father of modern yoga, if not for him it’s unlikely that your hatha yoga classes would work the way they do now, in fact, it’s entirely possible that hatha yoga would never have risen to prominence at all!
Krishnamacharya started his yogic journey at the age of 5. According to his journals written shortly before his death, his father began with an introduction to Patanjalis yoga sutras. Although his father died before Krishnamacharya reached puberty, he instilled in him an insatiable desire for knowledge.

Ready to stop 'doing' Yoga and start learning it?
Krishnamacharya pursued this thirst by apprenticing himself to a cave-dwelling guru called Yogeshwara Ramamohana Brahmachari. Krishnamacharya spent seven and a half years with Brahmachari. In this time he studied Patanjali’s yoga sutras, pranayamaPranayama: Yogic breathing techniques, the theraputic appliction of yoga and apparently mastered 3,000 asanasAsana: Yoga postures!!
Krishnamacharya was now a highly educated and accomplished yogi, however, he turned down numerous prestigious opportunities and chose to return home to live in absolute poverty.
After his marriage in 1925, Krishnamacharya worked on a coffee plantation to make ends meet. His spare time was spent travelling, educating and offering demonstrations of yogic prowess and mind-blowing siddhisSiddhis are yogic ‘super-powers’.. Krishnamacharya’s aim was the revival of Hatha Yoga.
It was whilst delivering a lecture in Mysore that Krishnamacharya attracted the attention of a scholar, Amarnātha Jhā. Amarnātha Jhā, impressed by what he heard, introduced Krishnamacharya to a number of Monarchs who were also taken with his demeanour, approach and understanding. Thus began a new chapter in the story of Krishnamacharya. More will follow soon, but in the meantime, you can find a full biography on Wikipedia.
